Challenging Collecting and Exhibition Practices
Thanks to a generous donation from one of Davidson College’s many supporters, this is a new course offering that will provide students interested in curatorial and collection practices with hands-on, practical experiences in the field. This seminar focuses on art collection practices of different public and private institutions in the United States and other countries to unpack to consider how museum collection frameworks, methods, and systems of categorization stem from colonialist modes of oppression relying heavily on biases of gender, race, and economics. Though recently we have strived to rectify similar biases manifest in the college’s own art collection, with the addition of many artworks by artists from different racial, gender and sexuality, and socioeconomic backgrounds, there is still work to be done!
